WHAT HEIDE AND IAIN HAVE BEEN ENJOYING
We thought you might like to hear a little bit about what we’ve been reading and thinking about.
Heide:
I recently read Gentlemen and Players by Joanne Harris. It’s not a new book, but it was very enjoyable. It’s set in an old-fashioned boys’ school and the two narrators have very different aspirations for the place (one of them sees it as a precious bubble, timeless and special, and the other wants to bring it down). It’s a fun journey, with an unreliable narrator and a twist at the end.
Iain:
I recently read two horror novels by writers I’ve long admired. Into the Mist by Lee Murray pits a geological survey party against a prehistoric lizard (not a dinosaur, honest!) in the wild forests of New Zealand. I visited that corner of NZ many years ago and the setting – how many NZ-set novels do you see? – really brought the story to life.
In contrast, Jeff Strand’s Ferocious has an uncle and niece fighting against zombie forest creatures. This US-set novel was wild and daft and featured enough zombie squirrels and chainsaw action to satisfy anyone.
