Free book event and a 99p book of the month

Iain: Hello, friend. Well, we all appear to have survived January.

Heide: The key is to wait it out. I find that January gives up before you do.

Iain: We tried to make the best of it, didn’t we? Even if we’re all feeling a little bit poorer after the excesses of Christmas. And you, once again, masterminded a little bit of January cheer to make things a little brighter.

Heide: I wouldn’t say masterminded. I’m not sure I have the intellect for that. But, yes, together we helped organise another “LOLS @ the Bookshop” event. It’s something we started last year with the simple idea of giving away free funny books to people in local bookshops.

Iain: Last year, we ran it at the Heath Bookshop in Birmingham. It’s a wonderful book shop tucked down a side street in Kings Heath. Catherine and Claire who run the shop organise lots of literary events in the area and get some big names to come along.

Heide: This year, the LOLS @ the Bookshop event also appeared at Astley Book Farm. It’s a lovely place in the middle of the countryside. Very popular with people who want to meet for tea and cake and then explore the largest second hand bookshop in the midlands.

Iain: We were delighted that Caimh McDonnell donated a large quantity of books to the event.

Heide: Yes, if any of our subscribers have not yet read any books by by Caimh McDonnell (or his alter-ego CK McDonnell) then you really should.

Iain: I like his ‘Stranger Times’ books. It’s a comedy series about a badly run little newspaper in Manchester that reports on strange and paranormal events in the area. The character and the humour is great.

Heide: Speaking of paranormal books with great characters and humour –

Iain: Wow, is that the segue you’re going to use to start talking about our book of the month?

Heide: Maybe.

Iain: So, speaking of paranormal books that may or may not be as funny and as characterful as Caimh McDonnell’s, we’ve got another Book of the Month.

Heide: We certainly have. And it’s an absolute favourite of ours. We had so much fun with it. Spell in the County is the story of Jenny, a woman born to be a Wicked Witch but who really just wants to lead a calm and boring life.

Iain: Yes we should. It’s not until June, but tickets are on sale now.
